Home fire safety should start with a working smoke detector and a fire safety plan. If you already have those in your home, you may consider a fire extinguisher as the next step in fire preparedness!
A fire extinguisher works to put out a small fire by removing one of the three components of the fire triangle: heat, oxygen, and fuel. The most common fire extinguisher removes oxygen from fire by smothering it in dry chemical foam. The National Fire Protection Association recommends a multipurpose extinguisher that works to suppress fires from ‘ordinary combustibles,’ grease fires, and electrical fires. On the market, this translates to a fire extinguisher that is ABC rated, such as a unit with a 3A:40-B: C rating, or the slightly smaller 2A:10-B: C rating. These units with these ratings can be found at almost any home improvement store.

Also, just as important is having a working smoke detector in each room of your home should be your priority in home fire preparedness. Two-thirds of home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) recommends checking the batteries in your smoke detector once a month, changing them once a year, and replacing the unit once in a 10-year period.

Any kind of disasters are scary, but having a plan makes them less so. Lets be ready!!!

Disasters happen. It’s frightening to think about the possibility of having to flee your home due to a widespread emergency, but it’s even more frightening to think that you would be entirely unprepared for such a situation. By making just a few considerations now, you and your family can be ready for an evacuation in the future.
If a local emergency triggers an evacuation, your family will need a place to go. That’s why the first step in your evacuation plan should be designating two or three out-of-town locations in separate directions where you could go. These locations could be hotels or houses of friends or family; if you have pets, it’s important to make sure they can shelter your pets, too. Then make sure you’re familiar with alternate routes away from your home, and means of public transportation in case driving your vehicle isn’t an option.
With many weather events and some natural disasters (like forest fires), there may be a forewarning that you’ll need to evacuate. In these cases, make sure to keep your gas tank full and to create a “go-bag” of essentials that you can pick up and take with you at a moment’s notice. When local officials give the word to evacuate, take as few cars as possible and stick to recommended evacuation routes as shortcuts could be blocked. Before you leave, it’s also best to unplug electrical equipment (though it’s only necessary to unplug refrigerators and freezers if there’s a risk of flooding), lock all of your doors and windows, and activate your family communication plan by letting an out-of-town family member know where you’re going and when you arrive. What Is Hydroxyl Generators and how It Take the Odor Out of Fire Damage

Fire damage restorers have used specialized equipment for many years to deal with the odor. It is because, after a domestic fire, lingering smells are one of the biggest frustrations. Fortunately, SERVPRO has access to odor-busting foggers, masking agents, filters, chemicals, and ozone generators.

Our technicians use a combination of these devices and machines to pluck smoke and soot particles from the atmosphere. They are highly effective in restoring fire damage in homes. One of the most sophisticated tools we use is called the hydroxyl generator, and we will tell you a little more about it.

What is Deodorization? While they are different processes, ozone and hydroxyl generators work similarly. They produce particles that have odor-eliminating properties. In the case of hydroxyl, these particles are created all the time naturally. They develop when ultraviolet light reacts with water and oxygen. All that we do is accelerate the process by introducing more UV light.

When created in an atmosphere where odor-causing chemicals are present, hydroxyl particles decompose. They are often referred to as a ‘natural broom’ because they ensure that indoor environments contain minute levels of these chemicals. Hydroxyl is particularly useful when dealing with unpleasant odors due to its speed. It can break down as many as 5,000 chemicals.

Hydroxyl particles break down airborne chemicals around a million times faster than ozone. They are the second most powerful oxidant in existence (after fluorine). Interestingly, using ozone in very high concentrations can cause it to work faster than hydroxyl. The problem is that, in such quantities, it is toxic. If the SERVPRO technicians decide to use ozone in your business, you may have to vacate the premises.

On the other hand, hydroxyl generators are much kinder to the environment. They do not threaten humans or plant life and rarely require containment.

The first way that you can help to prevent home fires is to familiarize yourself with the different kinds of smoke detectors that are on the market. There are two kinds of smoke detectors on the market, ionization and photoelectric. Ionization smoke detectors are best used for detecting the smoke that is given off from flaming fires where the photoelectric smoke detector is best for detecting the smoke particles given off from smoldering fires. The National Fire Protection Association will tell you that most deaths in home fires are due to smoke inhalation. However, since each alarm is equipped to detect different types of fires, and there is no way to determine which kind of fire will break out in a home, it is best to purchase both. Smoke detectors should be installed on every floor of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Remember to test your smoke detectors monthly and change batteries as needed.

The second tip is to have a fire extinguisher. Every home should have at least one fire extinguisher. It’s a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, laundry room, nearby to water heaters and breaker boxes, and nearby to grills and other potential fire hazards. If a blaze were to break out in your home, you’re probably going to evacuate rather than attempt to fight the fire, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep a fire extinguisher in your home. Commercial buildings have come a long way in fire safety in recent years. Thankfully many are equipped with sprinkler systems or other fire suppressant systems. Most also have multiple fire extinguishers on hand as well as fire exit plans posted. But do your employees know how these systems work? Here are a few tips to help ensure that your equipment is working correctly and that your staff knows what to do in case of fire emergency.

1. Fire Alarms. Fire Alarms should be checked regularly to confirm they are functioning properly. This is the first line of defense in an emergency. This alerts your staff and customers that they need to quickly exit the building.
2. Fire Extinguishers. Do you have enough fire extinguishers on hand? No employee should have to travel more than 75 feet to reach one. Do you your employees know where they are or how to use one? These are important safety measures to go over.
3. Emergency Exit Lights. Confirm that all of your emergency exit lights are correctly placed and are functioning. They should illuminate when main power is off. This helps people to find the exit quickly in the case of emergency when tensions are high and visibility may be lost. Exit signs should have a test button that you can use to regularly ensure that they are functioning correctly.

It is going to be a hot one this year! The Fourth of July is on a Sunday this year, which means a lot of people will be outside, grilling, and hanging out. As we get together with one another it is important to remember the safety of grilling. Check out below for some tip and tricks about your grill. Stay safe this weekend everyone!  

General grilling tips:

• Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
• The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
• Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
• Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
• Never leave your grill unattended.

Before you use your grill:

• Check the major connection points between the gas (propane) tank hose and the regulator and cylinder, and where the hose connects to the burners. Tighten if loose.
• Check the gas (propane) tank hose for the potential (gas) leaks. To do that:
• Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose using a brush or spray bottle.
• Turn the propane tank on. If there is a gas leak, the propane will release bubbles around the hose (big enough to see).
• If there are no bubbles, your grill is safe to use.
• If there are bubbles, turn off the tank and check connections, then have your grill serviced by a professional before using it again.
• If the leak doesn’t stop, call the fire department immediately.

When the grill is on:

• As you are cooking, if you smell gas, turn off the gas tank and burners.
• If the leak stops immediately, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again.
• If the smell continues, move away from the grill and call the fire department immediately. Do not move the grill.

Synthetic: These synthetic residues appear when oil based materials are burned such as plastics and fabrics. This could include everything from window coverings, furniture, carpets, and electronics. When synthetic materials burn they will produce a thick black smoke, leaving behind a smeary residue that can create quite the mess if not cleaned up properly. In these situations avoid touching any of the residue to prevent smearing.

1. Have your chimney inspected and cleaned at least once a year by a professional, and more than that if creosote builds up on the chimney walls more rapidly.

3. Watch out for soot buildup. Soot is softer than creosote, but is also flammable and should be cleaned up regularly.

With Summer almost here and fire season getting started, it is good to prepare yourself in case of a home fire.

Install the correct number of smoke alarms. Put them in each bedroom and throughout the home. It is good practice to them once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year.

Show your children what the smoke alarms sound like and what to do when they hear it going off.

Ensure that all household members know two separate ways to escape from every room of your home and know the family meeting spot outside of your home.

Establish a family emergency communications plan and ensure that all household members know who to contact if they cannot find one another.

Practice fire drills from your home at least twice a year. Press the smoke alarm test button or yell “Fire“ to alert everyone that they must get out.

Make sure everyone knows how to call 9-1-1.

Teach household members to STOP, DROP and ROLL if their clothes should catch on fire.

California Department of Public Health advises residents of recent burn areas to use caution when cleaning up ash from wildfires. The ash from trees burned in forest fires is relatively nontoxic and similar to ash that might be found in your fireplace. However, ash from burned buildings, vehicles, and other similar items may contain many toxic substances, including arsenic, asbestos, lead, and fine particles that can aggravate asthma and other respiratory problems.

When evacuation orders are lifted, residents should be aware of potential health hazards during the clean-up and rebuilding process. It is important to limit the amount of ash that gets airborne. Leaf blowers and sweeping may seem like the smart way to clean it up, but this actually stirs the ash up so people may breathe it in, which can be dangerous.

In order to avoid potential health risks, CDPH recommends these safety tips for cleaning up ash:

• Never use a leaf blower, as it will spread the ash and blow it back into the air.
• Wear a close-fitting respirator that is rated N-95 or P-100 to block ash particles from being inhaled. Bandanas, surgical or cloth masks do not effectively block fine particles.
• Wear gloves, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and shoes to avoid skin contact with ash.
• If you do get ash on your skin, wash it off as soon as possible.
• Remove shoes before entering your home or use “sticky mats” in entryways and doors to remove dust and ash from your shoes. Sticky mats are sold at hardware stores.
• Do not allow children to play in ash. Wash ash off toys before children play with them.
• Clean ash off pets with either a damp cloth or bath.
• If you have a vegetable garden or fruit trees, wash the fruits or vegetables before eating them.
• The use of shop vacuums and other non-HEPA filter vacuums is not recommended. HEPA filter vacuums could be used, if available.

 How do I clean ash from my home?

Wash indoor surfaces with water. If a surface film is visible, wash with soap and water.

Wash cooking utensils with detergent and hot water or run them through the dishwasher.

Wash soft furnishings (upholstered furniture, curtains, carpets/rugs, cushions, and bedding) or vacuum using a vacuum with a HEPA filter, so particles don't blow back into your house.

Have heating, ventilating and air-conditioning units, and all ductwork professionally cleaned and replace filters, to remove soot, ash, and smoke residue.

California fire season is in full swing and sweeping across Northern California. If you have been affected by these recent fires or want to help those that have, here are some resources to get you started.

Donate to The Salvation Army’s wildfire relief fund at https://deloro.salvationarmy.org/del_oro/northern-california-wildfires

The Red Cross assists fire evacuees. They can also use donations; you can give online, www.redcross.org/donate/donation, call 800-RED-CROSS or text Red Cross to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Give to a California food bank that’s helping victims, but make sure they still need donations. Here’s a list: www.cafoodbanks.org/find-food-bank

For information on fires currently burning go to Cal Fire's incident page. You can find details about specific fires including location, acreage burned and evacuation orders and centers.

Stay clear of evacuation routes as much as possible if you are not under evacuation orders. Donors should not approach evacuation areas.

When LAFD says it is time you leave... you leave

If you're told to evacuate, leave early enough to avoid being caught in a fire, smoke, or road congestion. Don’t wait to be told by authorities to leave. In an intense wildfire, they may not have time to knock on every door. If you think it's time to leave, don't wait - get out.

• Keep a pair of old shoes and a flashlight handy for a night evacuation.
• Keep the six “P’s” ready, in case an immediate evacuation is required:
  • People and pets
  • Papers, phone numbers, and important documents
  • Prescriptions, vitamins, and eyeglasses
  • Pictures and irreplaceable memorabilia
  • Personal computers (information on hard drive and disks)
  • “Plastic” (credit cards, ATM cards) and cash

If you see smoke or fire in your area, immediately report it by dialing 9-1-1. Remember to take note of the location so that the dispatcher can send emergency equipment to the correct location before you hang up.

Evacuation May Be Necessary

• Back your car in the garage heading out with windows closed. Be sure to keep your keys with you so that you can evacuate quickly should it become necessary.
• Close the garage door, leave it unlocked, and disconnect automatic door opener in the case of power failure.
• Keep a flashlight and portable radio with you at all times and stay tuned to your local news station.

Outdoors

• Move combustible yard furniture away from the house or store it in the garage.
• Cover windows, attic openings, eaves, and vents with a less combustible material, such as 1/2-inch or thicker plywood.
• Close window shutters and blinds if they are fire-resistant.
• Attach garden hoses to faucets and place them so that they can reach all areas of your house.
• Place a ladder against the house on the opposite side of the approaching fire for access to the roof.
• Shut off Butane/propane or natural gas valves.

Indoors

• Close all windows and doors around your home to prevent sparks from blowing inside.
• Close all doors within the house to slow fire spread inside the house.
• Turn on the lights in all rooms of your house, on the porch, and in the yard. Your home will be more visible through the smoke or darkness.
• Move furniture away from windows and sliding glass doors to avoid ignition from the radiant heat of the fire.

Space heaters can be a quick way to heat up a room. However, they can be as dangerous as they are convenient if used improperly. Space heaters cause 25,000 home fires a year, and 6,000 emergency room visits, according to the Harvard University Environmental Health & Safety group.

Approximately one-third of all house fires nationwide happen during the cold home-heating months between December and February. Equipment that is intended to add a little extra warmth, such as space heaters, are the leading cause of these fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPE).

Before using a space heater, make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in good working condition.

Check to make sure the heater is clean and in good condition, and have all problems professionally repaired.

Place heater out of high-traffic areas and on a level, hard, non-flammable floor surface—NOT on carpets, furniture or countertops.

Space heaters have one purpose —to provide supplemental heating. Never use them to thaw pipes, cook food, or dry clothing or towels.

Remember to keep space heaters at least three feet from combustible liquids like fuel, spray cans and paint, as well as flammable items such as draperies, blankets, and sofas.

Never allow pets or children near an electric heater. Accidental contact could result in serious shock or burns.

Do not overload circuits. Never use extension cords or multiple plugs with a space heater, and make sure the unit is not plugged into the same circuit as other electric appliances.

If your space heater is plugged into a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) and it trips, don’t assume there is something wrong with the GFCI. Immediately stop using the heater until it can be checked out by a professional— if not, a serious shock could occur.

Never leave space heaters unattended. Turn it off and unplug it before leaving the room or going to bed.

The fumes that are released by these units during a fire can be toxic in the short-term, and may even linger for long periods of time. Carbon dioxide can cause cold burns to operators and can deplete oxygen supplies in the room. These extinguishers also contain chemicals that deplete the ozone layer and contribute to global warming.

In the last 4 weeks, we have had 3 calls regarding dryer fires. It made us realize that the public needs a reminder on how to clean the lint out.

1. Clean the lint out of the lint trap every time you use the dryer
2. Always follow the manufacturers instructions when installing the vent pipe.
3. Keep any flammables away from the dryer. (Cleaning products)
4. Choose a metal duct as opposed to a foil or plastic one.
5. Always read care labels on the clothes. (don’t turn the dryer on high if the articles of clothing say tumble on low)
6. Check the outdoor vent on a regular basis to make sure it is free from debris.
7. Clean the vents at least every 6 months
